Materials
A wood stovepipe is built from different gauges of steel (22 to 26 gauge). This gauge is strong and resists warping from the heat. They also come in single-wall designs with a variety of finishes like stainless steel, black paint and even chrome. Additionally, they will include attachment hardware if required for installation.
Building the Pipe
To build your stovepipe, simply attach the right kind of pipe to your stove. You will need to measure the distance from the chimney flue and attach a brace that will receive the pipe on the opening to the chimney. Stoves also require a certain amount of distance between the stove and the chimney. You will need to find out what this is before you buy and design your stovepipe.
Finding Parts
There are several sizes of stove pipes that are angled and shaped to fit almost every installation. You will need to figure out which pipes are going to fit your needs best. Stove pipes come in 90- and 45-degree elbow joints as well as T joints. Straight sections also come in various lengths. Visit a hardware store or a wood stove dealer to find the parts you need.
