How to Build a Countertop

How to Build a Countertop

Building a counter top can be as simple as laying plywood on top of a cabinet or as complex as inlaying precisely cut pieces into an existing top. Covering the kitchen cabinets in a desired material can vary from top to top. However, by learning the process of building any countertop, the DIY can gain valuable insight on other products.

Instructions

    1

Measure the depth of the cabinets. Measure the length of the cabinet as precisely as possible.

    2

Rip the inch plywood at the measurement taken for the depth with the table saw.

    3

Rip some 1 inch strips from the inch plywood to be the edging of the countertop.

    4

Cut any holes needed (sink holes, faucet holes) before securing the counter top to the cabinet. Add the edging to the front edge of the countertop and lay it on the cabinet.

    5

Secure the countertop to the cabinet with the deck screws. Be certain the screw heads are counter sunk. Next, cover the countertop with desired material.
