How to Decide if a Bamboo Countertop is Right for You

How to Decide if a Bamboo Countertop is Right for You

If you're doing a kitchen remodel, you're probably trying to decide if a unique countertop, such as a bamboo countertop is right for you. All of the materials that countertops are made out of--marble, laminate, wood--have their pros and cons. Let's look specifically at bamboo countertops. Will they fit into your lifestyle?

When you're looking at a bamboo countertop, keep in mind that it has many of the same properties that a wood countertop would have. If a wood countertop would work for you, chances are a bamboo countertop will be a good, or even better choice.

Instructions

    1

Consider the look you would like your kitchen to have. If you want an ultramodern look, bamboo countertops are probably not for you. On the other hand, if you want to combine modern with a bit of rustic, or go minimalistic with a Japanese style, bamboo countertops may be just what you're looking for.

    2

Think about your budget. The cost runs from $45 per square foot and up. Of course, bamboo countertops aren't the only ones that are pricey--that applies to just about any material that you choose, with the exception of laminate, which is pretty affordable.

    3

Are you bad about setting hot things on the counter? Bamboo isn't heat resistant, which means you can get scorch marks on the countertop.

    4

Do you mind maintaining a bamboo countertop? You will need to apply oil on occasion, although in general, bamboo countertops don't need to be oiled as often as other wood countertops.

    5

Do you like to live green? Bamboo countertops are a good green choice, since bamboo is a renewable resource. Since many of the retailers who sell bamboo countertops are aware that buyers may be green (and may be green companies themselves), you are likely to find bamboo countertops that have been put together without any harmful chemicals--a huge bonus when you are preparing food on them!

    6

Do you like to be unique? Bamboo countertops are a relatively new trend. Chances are, you'll be one of the first among your friends and family to have a bamboo countertop. They make great conversation starters!
