Now that you are finished installing your new cabinets, it is time to install your new countertops and kitchen sink. After choosing the type of sink for your kitchen, you'll want to make sure it is installed correctly. In order to prevent leaking and damage, follow a few simple steps. With very little effort you'll be on your way to the beautiful finished kitchen you've anticipated.
Instructions
Install a Kitchen Sink in a Countertop
- 1
Cut a hole in the countertop the size of the sink you will be using. Measuring the hole is simple. While the countertop is in place, draw a pattern on the underneath of the countertop, or use a template provided by the manufacturer. After you have determined where your sink will be placed and your outline is drawn, put the countertop upside down on saw horses and cut out the hole.
2Paint a polyurethane seal around the inside edges of the countertop. When installing a kitchen sink into a wood countertop, it is beneficial to seal the countertop's edges first. This prevents the penetration of any moisture into the wood. If using a different material for your countertops, sealing the edges might not be necessary. Check the manufacturers instructions.
3Put the countertop back on the base cabinets, checking to make sure that the sink hole is still aligned properly. If everything looks good, secure your countertop, and install your sink.
4Use glue, silicone caulk, or putty as your sealing agent. Apply it to the underside of your sink flange. Lower the sink inside the hole cutout holding it by the drain holes. Some sinks are heavy and require two people to install. Make sure not to disturb the sealant when placing the sink. Pay attention to detail. The sink needs to rest perfectly centered within the hole.
5Press down hard once the sink is in place to ensure a tight and secure fit. This will also prevent any future leakage. Any excess sealant can be wiped up with a damp cloth.
