How to Make Galley Kitchens More Functional

Galley kitchens are only suited for boats. Yet, some people decided that this would be a great layout in small homes. If you have this type of layout, you know that this couldn't be further from the truth. The problem is galley kitchens aren't as functional as other layouts. They also aren't ideal for couples that like to prepare meals together. If you're tired of your current layout, but don't have money for a full remodel, consider these tips.

Instructions

    1

Rethink the layout of your appliances. One of the biggest problems with galley kitchens is the placement of appliances. It's not uncommon to have a refrigerator placed at one end by itself. An easy way to make things more functional is to rearrange your appliances to where they form a triangle with your sink. This allows you to take items from the refrigerator to the sink and then the stove.

    2

Buy a cart. A small cart on wheels will make any galley kitchen more functional. This is especially true if you lack counter top space next to your stove. A cart can be wheeled into position and used for prepping ingredients. When you're done, you can roll it out of the way.

    3

Create workstations. Galley kitchens can cause arguments between couples that love to prepare meals together. The layout is simply too small to allow people to walk around without bumping into each other. In order to make this layout functional for couples, workstations must be created. For example, one person could be in charge of washing and peeling produce at the sink, while the other person chops and cooks the vegetables at the stove.

    4

Knock out part of a wall. If your kitchen is against a nonsupporting wall, have a contractor knock out part of the wall to create a bar. The bar can be used as additional counter top space. Best of all, it can be accessed from the other room. This means that your kitchen will seem more functional and spacious.

    5

Keep it organized. In order for any kitchen to be functional, it needs to be organized. Take time to make a place for everything. When you know where everything is, your meals will be easier to prepare.
