How to Replace Kitchen Counters

Kitchen counters are in a part of a house that probably gets more traffic than any other place. Consequently, it also needs the most maintenance. When it is time to replace them, then it is time to consider the options available. Materials to cover kitchen counters are wide and varied and can be relatively inexpensive or very elaborate, such as marble or granite. Regardless of the choice, the first thing that has to happen is the removal of the old kitchen counters.

Instructions

    1

Turn off the water supply to the sink and detach the drain. Remove the kitchen sink by determining the method it was installed. Look underneath the sink to see if there are clips holding the sink in place. If there, a screwdriver or nut driver will be needed to remove them. If not, use the pry bar by easing it under the lip of the sink and gently lifting.

    2

Once the sink is removed, the installation method of the existing kitchen counters will be visible. Some are screwed to the cabinets, but some are simply nailed through the deck. Use the pry bar to determine which by placing it between the countertop and the cabinet at the front of the sink area. If it is secured with screws through the deck, cutting the screws with the pry bar and hammer is the easiest course of action.

    3

Once removed, and after deciding what the new kitchen counters will be, prepare the area around the top of the cabinets accordingly. If new laminate material will be used, a good grade -inch plywood is best. Cut to fit and secure with 1 -inch deck screws.

    4

If using prefabricated, roll top kitchen counters, follow manufacturers guidelines. This usually means screws from underneath the tops and a clamping system, also underneath, to secure any L shaped countertops.

    5

Once the new kitchen counter is installed, follow manufacturers guides to care for them to get the maximum life possible.
