How to Build Kitchen Benches

Kitchen benches are an easy way to add a little more room around your table. If you have made the table yourself, then making your own benches should be a snap. If you are making benches for a table that you purchased, you will need to buy the same type of wood so that the set will match.

Instructions

    1

Measure the length and width that you want your table to be. Cut 2X4s to make a frame for the bench. You should have 2 pieces that are 2 inches shorter than the length of the bench and 4 pieces that are 4 inches shorter than the width of the bench. Nail the pieces together to form a rectangle with two of the shorter pieces on the inside to form support for the bench top.

    2

Cut the 4x4 wood pieces so that they are the height that you want the bench to be. Remember that you will need to cut it about 2 inches shorter to allow for the top of the bench. Shoulder the corners of 4 of the pieces so that they will fit into the corner of the frame and still connect with the top of the bench. Nail into place

    3

Use 2x6 boards to make the top of the seat. Place the boards so that there is an overlap on the frame of about 2 inches. Screw the boards into place using an electric screwdriver. Make sure that the boards fit smoothly together before you screw in place. If you need to sand or cut until you get a nice tight fit. Cover the screw holes with wood putty.

    4

Add a lattice edge for an apron around the frame. You can nail or screw this into place. You may opt for a smooth edge--use a 1X4 to do this.

    5

Sand the bench smooth with an electric sander. Be sure to round the edges of the bench to prevent injuries from falls.

    6

Paint or stain your benches to match your kitchen table and allow them to dry.
