How to Paint Formica Countertops

Formica countertops in apartments, older homes, mobile homes or campers may get worn to the point where the pattern is no longer visible or attractive. Instead of replacing your countertops, you may want to consider painting them to give them a facelift.

Instructions

    1

Prepare your Formica countertops for painting. You must rough up the area which you are getting ready to paint. To do this, use a fine piece of sandpaper and go over the whole area. This allows the paint to adhere to your Formica countertops.

    2

Clean the area with a solvent that removes all the dust and debris before you paint Formica countertops. Solvents such as lacquer thinner or acetone are best for this project. They evaporate and dry quickly on the surface. Remember, before using these solvents, check all pilot lights in the area and make sure they are off. These solvents are highly combustible. Also make sure you have good ventilation in the area. Raise all the windows in the area where you are working.

    3

Use epoxy paint when you paint Formica countertops. The epoxy paint dries harder and lasts longer than regular paints. Epoxy paint normally takes about two coats to adhere properly. You may apply epoxy paint with a soft-bristle paint brush.

    4

Think about using oil-base enamel paint as another option when you paint Formica countertops. This paint takes longer to dry than epoxy paint, but it is a little bit cheaper. It also takes about two coats to do the job correctly. Oil-base enamel paint is not as durable as the epoxy paint.
