How to Choose a Hood Vent for an Island Cooktop

Homeowners love the versatility a kitchen island offers. Many have chosen to install a cooktop on their islands to expand the cooking area. The downside to this is that you must also install a hood vent to remove steam and odors created while cooking, but you have many options to choose from.

Instructions

    1

Decide if you want to enhance the view of the hood or if you'd rather minimize it. If you're going for a modern architectural style, making the hood into a focal point in the kitchen works well. If, however, you have a country kitchen or more traditional home, you'd probably want to draw as little attention to it as possible.

    2

Measure the island and the cooktop. You'll need to determine how large you want the vent to be. Also, take into consideration the height of the ceiling from which the hood will hang.

    3

Create a budget. The hood vent itself will contribute to the cost, but you'll also have to pay to get a vent stack installed. Get quotes from several contractors to help you determine the cost of this modification to your home.

    4

Browse through online catalogs to find styles you like. Some are horizontal, while others are curved. Some even have small details added to enhance their appearances. Look at different finishes; examples include brushed nickel, chrome, brass and copper.

    5

Consider the bells and whistles that come on the different models. Some have touch sensitive controls, while others have switches or buttons to control the fan and lights. The number of lights differs from model to model as well as number of grease filters. There are different fan speeds to choose from, too.
