How to Clean Built-in Vacuum Cleaners

Maintaining a built-in vacuum cleaner consists of a few easy steps; these help to extend the life of the unit significantly and to improve its performance during this time. Also known as central vacuum cleaners or ducted vacuum cleaners, these use either direct straight-line suctioning, or filtered, systems, which suction the air toward a cloth, screen, foam or paper dust-collection bag that filters the air, or cyclonic technology, which uses centrifugal, tornado-like force combined with gravity to suck air toward a canister and separate the impurities from the air. The filters of either unit should be changed often, and the bag or canister should be changed at least once a year, or whenever they are full.

Instructions

Clean Built-in Vacuum Cleaners

    1

Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.

    2

Change the dirt bag if you have a filtered system. To do this, remove the lid from the unit, followed by the rubber gasket around the top of the filter bag.
a.)Remove the filter bag by pulling on the tab; this will pull out both the paper bag as well as the cloth bag. Discard only the paper bag.
b.)Wipe the unit with a TornadoPower Central Vacuum Maintenance cloth
c.)Insert a new paper bag, and stretch the top of the bag over the rim of the cloth bag; make sure the pull tab on the paper bag is facing upwards.
d.)Replace the cloth unit (instructions for this should be on the lid of the unit).
e.)Replace the cover of the unit; be sure to do this properly or else the unit will lose suction power.

    3

Change the canister if you have a cyclonic, SINGLE UNIT CANISTER, system (for instructions on how to change a split unit canister cyclonic system please see your manufacturer's manual for the specific instructions for this step.). To do this, lift the two latches on the side of the unit.
a.)Remove the lower part of the unit.
b.)Wipe both the lower part of the unit as well as the upper part with a TornadoPower Central Vacuum Maintenance cloths.
c.)Clean the foam filter, also known as the vacuum pump protection screen, by feeling the top of the unit. A clean toilet brush cleaner may be used if you wish to preserve this filter, or an entirely new one may be inserted at this point. If inserting a new one, be sure that the entire outer edge of the foam is secured under the metal lip from which it was previously attached.
d.)Replace the lower portion of the unit, and fasten the two clamps. in the canister, or empty the canister.

    4

Use the TornadoPower Central Vacuum Maintenance cloths to clean the vacuum head, hoses and other attachments.

    5

Plug the electrical cord back in.

    6

Suck up one TornadoPower Central Vacuum Maintenance cloth at each inlet.
