How to Make a Cabinet Door Drill Jig / Location Template for Intalling Cabinet Knobs

How do you install cabinet knobs and drawer pulls consistently and accurately without making mistakes. It is done with a location and drill jig. Follow these instructions and you will have a jig that can be used on both right-hand and left-hand doors.

Instructions

    1
    Stickly tack and knob

Determine the location of the knobs for your cabinets.
This can be done using stickly tack on the knobs

    2
    Trial locations for knobs

Install several knobs cabinets to help set the locations

    3
Measuring the location for the knobs

Select the final location and measure the distance from the side and bottom of the door. Write down these measurement for reference.

    4
Marking location for drilling knob hole

Mark the location for the knob on the piece of hard wood (jig) approximately 1/2" from the top and right edges of the jig.

    5
Edge of the door on the jig.

Measure over the left edge the distance of the knob from the side of the door and draw a vertical line on the jig.

    6
Vertical line to locate dowl pins

Then draw a second line to the left 1/2 the diameter of the dowel pins. Mark a dowel pin location on this line parallel with the knob location. Measure down the second line 1-1/2" down and mark a second dowel pin location.

    7
    location of bottom dowel pin

Measure down from the knob location on the jig the distance from the bottom of the door and add 1/2 the diameter of the dowel pin. Mark this location for the dowel pin.

    8
    Completed jig location drawing

Drill the dowel pin holes using the dowel pin drill bit. And insert dowel pins so that they protrude out on both sides of jig (this allows the jig to be used for right & left hand door knobs).

    9

Drill the knob location hole in the jig using the knob drill bit

    10

You are done the jig can be used for both lefthand and righthand doors just by flipping the jig over.
