How to Paint Kitchen Tile

How to Paint Kitchen Tile

If you're tired of your old kitchen tile, but aren't quite up to footing the bill or doing the work required to take them up and/or replace them, there is a simple and inexpensive option. You can paint your kitchen tile. Whether on the countertops or the backsplash---and yes, even on the floor---your kitchen tiles will be transformed into a clean and modern look with a simple coat (or two) of paint.

Instructions

    1

Sand any areas of tile or grout that are rough or broken. Use a clean paintbrush and sweep away all of the dust and debris created by sanding.

    2

Tape off any adjacent areas you don't want covered in paint, using the painter's tape. If you are brush painting, apply one coat of latex paint and allow to dry for three or four hours before determining if a second coat is needed.

Spray the area with textured spray paint, if choosing this option. Use even motions and spray from left to right, making sure you cover all areas. You will only need one coat of textured spray paint. Textured paint doesn't run or drip the way standard spray paint can. Standard spray paint isn't a good option for painting over tile.

    4

Apply a second coat of latex paint, if needed. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.

    5

Apply grout between the tiles, using your finger or a putty knife. Wipe away excess with a damp sponge. Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours before replacing items on or near the tiles.
