Sprinkler Systems Maintenance

Sprinkler Systems Maintenance

Having an in-ground sprinkler system on your property not only makes your lawn care easier to manage, it also adds value to the resale value of your home. If you are planning to install a sprinkler system for your lawn, or if you are planning to purchase a home that has one, here are a few tips to help you maintain your sprinkler system and keep it in good operating order for years to come.

Reinstall Backflow Hardware and Adjust Valves

Turn off the water supply to your main valves, and re-install any disconnected backflow hardware by inserting the threaded tee into your water source pipe and connecting it through the tee to a PVC male adapter. Flush all valves thoroughly to remove any debris.

Check all Fittings and Look for Leaks

Adjusting your sprinkler heads for maximum arc and spray is easy.

Every spring, before you use your in-ground sprinkler system for the first time, turn the water supply on, and check all valves and the main water line for leaks. Then, align your spray heads to make sure they are giving even coverage. You may need to make simple adjustments on the sprayheads to get the proper arc in the water flow. To do this, use the key provided by your manufacturer, or use a wrench and screwdriver to loosen or tighten the screw on the top of the sprinkler head. In general, each 360 degree turn of the screw will provide or inhibit a 90 degree arc of water flow.

Repairing Leaky Valves

If you find leaks in one of your valves, you will need to turn off the water supply, remove the bonnet, spring and diaphragm gasket from the top of the valve using a screwdriver, and install a new valve diaphragm at the top of the valve. If you have to do this, be sure that you first sop up any excess water in the unit with towels, and remove and thoroughly dry the solenoid unit before replacing it into the repaired valve. After you replace all the parts, turn the water on again to check for leaks. After you have completed the repair, reprogram your control box for the proper seasonal schedule for your lawn.
