How to Make Retro Kitchen Appliances

If you loved the 50's and 60's and want the look that screamed update and cool for that time period, you need to hop in your '57 Chevy convertible and high tail it to the hardware to make retro kitchen appliances that would make Grandma sigh with nostalgia.

Choose a color that screams retro. Color schemes from that period range from ultra bright to ultra cool. Bright red, turquoise blue, pink, yellow and, of course, black all found their home in the kitchens of the 50's and 60's.

Buy appliance paint, which is relatively inexpensive and will provide a professional finish. There are spray types and roll on but most people feel that the spray is the best type. If you choose a roll on, select the roller type that best suits your needs. A sponge roller leaves a fingerprint proof finish.

Clean the appliance thoroughly before you begin. Lightly sand the appliance so that you have a better surface grip.

Inspect the appliance for any chips and scratches before you make the retro kitchen appliances. Sand them down or fill them in and sand smooth before you paint.

Follow the directions on the paint. Each paint manufacturer gives directions specifically for that type of paint. Some paint requires a second coat while the paint of the first is still tacky. Other paints need the first coat to be thoroughly dry. Make sure that the area is well ventilated and free of dust and bugs. A garage that has good ventilation usually works well. Use only heat resistant paint on items like the stove. Check on the label for this information. Use the same paint for the refrigerator and microwave so the colors match.

Change the handles on the door to look like the old refrigerators. Find new burner grates that match the time for the old gas stove.

Invest in an appliance refinisher. If do-it-yourself is not your thing, hire out the job to an appliance refinisher. These people do electrostatic painting for a living and create an authentic, top quality finish. The cost is higher to make retro kitchen appliances than a do-it-yourself paint job, but you'll probably be happier with the final product.
