No kitchen renovation is complete without an overhaul to the cabinets, one of the room's most prominent features. But new kitchen cabinets are usually pricey and could push your project over budget. A much more affordable option can be painting the cabinets. Just a few coats of paint and your cabinets will have a whole new look to go along with your new kitchen.
Water-based Paint
Water-based acrylic paints are easier to apply and clean up. Additionally, they do not have as strong an odor as oil-based paints.
Oil-based paints
Oil-based paints result in a glossier finish than water-based paints, but they do take longer to dry and have a strong odor. Most experts agree oil-based paints are the best bet for most kitchen cabinets.
Clean and Sand
Before the priming and painting can begin, the cabinets will need to be thoroughly cleaned and sanded. To clean them, use an all-purpose cleaner and make sure to dry them when done. Sanding should only be done when the cabinets are dry, and you should use a fine sand paper.
Priming
No matter what kind of paint you choose, you will need to prime your cabinets before the painting begins. Choose a primer based on the type of paint you are using: oil-based primers for oil-based paint or shellac primer for latex paints. Be sure to let the primer dry overnight.
Application
There are a couple of options for applying the paint. For an even coat, a pneumatic sprayer is your best bet. Another option is to use a paint brush. Use a high-quality brush with a size of 2 1/2 to 3 inches.
